Today we take you to Kapchorwa, a small Ugandan village in the foothills of Mount Elgon.
This is precisely whereMasaba coffee grows!
We are about 1800 meters above sea level, near Sipi Falls, with rich vegetation and volcanic soil. Almost every family living here is involved in coffee cultivation: tending the plants, harvesting, washing and drying.
Today Kapchorwa is an extraordinary location not only for its coffee, but also for the incredible concentration of talent inlong-distance running. It is now known as the "Land of Champions," home to Uganda's greatest athletes, world record holders and Olympic marathon winners.
Among them areJoshua Cheptegei, Stephen Kiprotich (gold at the 2012 London Olympics) and Jacob Kiplimo (two-timeWorld Half Marathon Champion). These athletes set an example for hundreds of young Ugandans, who train on Kapchorwa's steep dirt roads with dreams of one day making it to the Olympics as well.
Their training follows a strict weekly structure, alternating between more intense days and rest days. But they all begin with a hearty breakfast and the ritual of a good coffee...Masaba of course!
